Early Childhood and Adolescence of Sandra Oh
Sandra Oh comes from a family of South Korean immigrants who moved to Ottawa in the 1960s. She was born in Canada’s capital in 1971. The Oh family was not wealthy, and besides Sandra, they also raised a son, Ray, and a daughter, Grace.
As a child, Sandra suffered from pigeon toes, so her parents enrolled her in ballet classes at the age of four.
From a very young age, Sandra Oh displayed extraordinary charisma. At the age of 10, she played her first role in a school musical titled The Canadian Goose. She was highly active and determined. While still in middle school, she decided to establish the Active Students Club, advocating for environmental protection. She led a campaign against plastic cups and continued her activism in high school, where she was elected student council president.
During her school years, Sandra Oh actively pursued music and dance while also taking acting classes. She was a versatile individual, interested in various activities. However, despite her long dedication to dance, she felt it was not her calling and decided to focus entirely on acting.

After graduating from high school, her parents insisted that she continue her studies at Carleton University, where she was offered a scholarship. She also promised her parents that if she did not succeed, she would enroll at Carleton University.
Despite financial and other difficulties, Sandra successfully graduated from the theatre school in 1993.
Sandra Oh’s Acting Career
Immediately after completing her studies at the Montreal Theatre School, Sandra Oh was invited to participate in the British production of the opera Oleanna. This was her first significant role on a major stage. She also began receiving offers to star in biographical films about Chinese-Canadian women.
Sandra Oh gained fame in Canada thanks to her first leading role in the Canadian drama film Double Happiness. She played the lead role of a Chinese woman struggling to assert her independence despite her family’s expectations and criticisms. Her performance in this film received high praise from critics, and she won the Genie Award for Best Actress. This marked a turning point in her career, bringing her increased attention and more film and television roles. She received another Genie Award for Best Actress in 1998 for her role in Last Night. Throughout her acting career, she has appeared in 46 films and more than 37 television projects.
Sandra Oh gained widespread recognition after starring in the series Arliss. However, her global fame skyrocketed after she played Dr. Cristina Yang in Grey’s Anatomy. She remained on the show for 10 seasons, solidifying her status as a household name.
